New Experiences in Klaggy

Monday for P-day we just walked around Klagenfurt and what not and I got a picture in front of the Dragon Fountain (Lindwurmbrunnen).
That statue is of Hercules battling the dragon to save the town of Klagenfurt!

The town is setting up their Christmas shops, so it will be awesome soon! I'll send pictures when they finally open, and yeah I'll get pictures of the apartment and church building also.

Monday night we were invited to the local mosque to talk with the Muslims there, in English, well it was interesting and what not but I did get a Quran in Arabic with the English translation right next to it so yeah.  Tuesday, well we don't have a district just us, so president said we could go to Graz for district meeting so we did that.  It's a 2 hour bus ride there and Graz is not even in our zone haha.  Then we tried to help with the refugees here but there was nothing that we could do at the moment.  They said it's been crazy so we try and help as much as we can. And by them I mean  the Austrian Red Cross.  They still have no idea what to do with all the refugees and 6.000 are coming every day into Germany or Austria, so yeah it's crazy.   Wednesday we went to St. Veit, a city north of Klagenfurt and checked in on less actives in the area and we got invited into a Jehovah Witnesses family home and yeah, we are going back on Saturday, so yeah.  The family was a piece of cake compared to the Muslims! Friday we had ward work day.  We cleaned the Keller and there are so many rooms down there!  Like climb up a little wall and 6 or so feet tall rooms with dirt floors and mold, but we just moved all the canned bread that was canned in 1987-1988......haha!  Yeah old right?  Then that night we met with the Muslims again and learned a lot about Islam this time.  It's an interesting thing haha, but yeah they were not so happy, and when I say they I mean the leader guy, when I said he is doing all the question asking and yeah.  But we mostly just sit on the floor and eat nuts and Arabian gum and coconut, it's pretty good, and talk but yeah.  Saturday we just went finding in Villach, I sent a picture and video on Dropbox of it and yeah.  Sunday was Sunday.  We had a ward potluck after, that was fun and then went dooring in Klaggy

Yeah it seems like Katie and Jack are doing a lot of practices, haha but I hope they do good in Indy.  Don't worry about me mom haha that's the last thing I want you to do for me, I'm fine!  Yeah it's getting cold here but it's pretty warm today.

So with daddy's day well I can tell you from how I feel is that forgetting the day or not thinking about it is just not the way to go, but that's just how I feel, so yeah.

Yes mom, I am getting enough to eat and we have like 8 blankets and pillows and 7 mattresses so don't worry mom.  Austria is not some 3rd world country, haha.  Don't worry about shoes, well my shoes are good.  I did find another pair in the apartment here and they are in good condition so I have 2 now but my insoles are getting really bad like where the balls of my feet are it's well worn through, but I bought new ones to put over the old so it's all cool.

That's awesome that Anna met the elders there is she having lessons or anything like that?  That would be awesome to get the mission weekly email and see her in it!  Haha, well I most likely won't see her again because I'm not aloud in Switzerland, only EU elders and sisters are so yeah, but maybe if she comes into Austria or Germany.  Well I hope I have not forgotten anything, but yeah I love you mom.  You have a great week.  Oh I forgot to tell you, on Sunday we had a guy come to church, and well it's been a while since a non member has come to church.  The members were happy and nice to him.  He said he would come back next week and that he had a great time here, so I'm excited for that.

So you have a great week mom, you do you.  :)

 Love,
 Elder Summers

Have Fun, Work Hard, Do the Lord's Work...

This week was interesting I told you what I did Monday, hiking the Dobratsch....

Beauty as far as the eye can see.

Beautiful old chapel in the Dobratsch

McKendrick, Summers, Nelson, and Bybee on the Dobratsch summit above Klagenfurt, Austria

Elder Summers turning into a mountain goat.

"Climb every mountain..."

Tuesday we went to the McOmbers, they do genealogy work and work with books that date back to 1630 or so, it was really cool to see that.  Then later we stopped by on people in Kühnsdorf and yeah, then we helped with the refugees in Klagenfurt.   We set up beds for them and what not, I'll send a pic..

Aiding the refugees in Klagenfurt

Wednesday was tausch, which means we change comps for the day. I went with Elder Bybee to get his visa, then after we were done with that all of us went to an Asian buffet.  At the end they put down shots for us, as a "on the house" drink! Haha!  It's funny, if you look old enough to drink they give you drinks.   That night we had dinner at the Christisans, the senior couple here so that was fun.  Oh, that day we also met a drunk American that the other elders found and well, he was pissed because his phone had gotten stolen. He kept saying he was going to lead a life of crime now cause it was stolen and he was going to go beat up and kill Serbs cause they stole it.  So we (Elder Bybee and myself) spent a good half hour trying to get him not to kill or beat up anyone! So yeah, he was VERY drunk haha.

Thursday we saw the other two elders off so now it's just me and Elder Nelson.

McKendrick and Summers

Summers/Bybee goodbye

We also had a Skype lesson with a person who lives 3 hours away and well, if the gospel was a pool she jumped in the deep end, head first, without knowing how to swim, like watching the Temple video and yeah, stuff like that.  Then later we cleaned the apartment because it was really dirty, and yeah that was that.

Friday was just dooring and on Saturday we doored some more.

Dooring the chapel in the Dobratsch
That was on Halloween day, then at night we helped with the ward kids party, but no trunk or treating here. So yeah, that's my week.

(Answering questions)  Yeah they do the fall back thing here also.  Well honestly we had no eating appointments this week so I just had what we had at home haha. (cereal) My German, well honestly it's coming along, but not where I would like it to be.  Like I can understand some but not all, and my comprehension is not that great like I hear the words and what not but it takes a while to register what they said, if that makes sense.  Well the blessing I have seen this week is with my German, it's getting better line upon line.  I'm just not that fast of a learner, but yeah.

I love you mom. You are the very best mom ever but you know that, haha.  Keep up all the hard work you do and be awesome.

 Love,
 Elder Summers

Things are looking up

Yeah conference was the best one I have ever had I took a bunch of notes in a study journal but it's at the apartment, so yeah.  Next week I promise I'll tell you what I wrote down. From what I remember is that the gospel is simple, don't let the big stuff drag you down, let your light shine forth, always be true to God and your faith even when things may seem crap, it will get better, always.

So my week was interesting.  Wednesday we went up to Salzburg because of zone conference, got up at 4:30 to take a bucket shower cause the water was broken, then walked 30 min because we missed the bus to bahnhof to take a 6:30 train to Salzburg, which was a 3 hr ride.  We didn't get back until 9:30.  Friday we had an eating appointment with bishop (btw the member that bishop asked about still lives here and is a really cool guy) Saturday was interesting; So the Klagenfurt area is freaking huge!  Like it would take us 5 hours by train to get across the whole area, so we are pretty much stuck in Klagenfurt, So a member is an IT guy and is making a website for the area so we can post videos and what not and teach those that are super far away, so that was at 8:30, took till 10 or so then studies and weekly plan.   So a member invited all 4 of us to a charity dinner thing, but it was during general conference so we were not going to go but they bought tickets for us which each cost a lot of money per person, so we went.  It was in Villach, which is 30 min away by car.  So that started at 7, member picked us up and it got done at midnight......so we got to bed around 1 or so then got up at 7 to go to the church at 9 to watch Saturday morning session.  Right after that we watched priesthood, after that Saturday afternoon session, then Sunday morning.  So that all got done at 8 pm but Sunday afternoon was at 10 pm my time, so we did not watch that one.  We watched ALL sessions of conference, but one, in one day!....it was really, really good but never again.   We got food after priesthood but then we waited till dinner. yeah
Looking fly and upfront is Elder Summers, far right is Elder Nelson his companion, middle kiddo is Elder Bybee and touchdown boy is Elder McKendrick.  Klagenfurt Ward missionaries.

I got Hannah's letter and the seal is still good on it, that's a cool thing and yeah the package came today but I need to wait till 4:30 to get it.  I'm glad you liked my letter.   I think it came at a good time, haha.  I'll be waiting for your letter.  So the only thing I need to buy for winter is gloves, and I was told girl leggings for under the slacks cause legs get volcano, that's it.   I withdrew spending, well stamps but yeah.  Honestly I'm not finding the chocolate to be that amazing cause I'm on a missionary fund so that means nothing expensive, haha.

My 3  positives:
1. The ward is cool
2. The mountains are cool
3. And it's cooling down temperature wise.

My 2 negative is:
1. No one wants to talk to us, that's the main thing

Well the food is the same as Wien so nothing new to talk about. The troll guy with the barrel, Wötherseemandl, look him up.  Google could tell the story better than I could, so yeah.
Legend has it that in an effort to remind a group of late night partiers that Easter was the next day, this little guy uncorked a barrel of water and in so doing, created Lake Wöthersee. In spite of this somewhat daunting story, visitors today come here to rub his outstretched finger for good luck
Things with the other elders are good we all get along, so don't worry haha.  Things are getting better in my attitude wise too.  Still no investigators though, but yeah.  It's getting colder here so I'm excited for that!  I did have some fire roasted Maroni ( chestnut ) and they are a really soft nut haha but that's my week so far.  You better have a great week and be the best!  I love you so very much!

 Love,
 Elder Summers

Keeping his sense of Humor

Elder Summers showing he's got a sense of humor about his new area.  I know he's trying hard but sometimes you just feel like this.....
Ben included this picture in this weeks letter, this and a rundown of his week.  I think he was serious but I couldn't help but laugh.

So, three positives things about Klagenfurt...

1. it's by mountains
2. it's, well not going to lie, that's all I can think of.

I have just accepted the fact that it's going to be a challenge for me, so yeah.  Klagenfurt B, that means there are 4 elders in the same ward, so just one ward but 4 elders, me and Elder Nelson, Elder Bybee and Elder Mckendrick.  So yeah, we all live together in our 4 man apartment.  The members are good to us so yeah.  My German is getting better, I think. When it gets hard I just say to myself the motto from the last area, sucks to suck, so yeah

-Tuesday we went to Kühnsdorf and found there and got no one.
-Wednesday was the same thing but with A LOT of rain.
-Thursday we tried to sign in for Klagenfurt.  So in Austria you have to sign in       where you are living, so yeah that took a while then we just went finding.
-Friday we had dinner at the bishops house so that was fun and the start of the   day was the same as all others.
-Saturday we went to Salzburg for stake priesthood meeting which is a 2hr drive   through the mountains, that was fun and that took all day.
-Sunday we had a unexpected eating appointment and yeah, found for a hour    and went home.

So all in all my days are the same here it feels like I have been here for a really long time..... But yeah I hope it gets better, yeah.  I'll be on the look out for the package I'm excited for it.

I love you mom you are the very best keep on being the very best.

 Have a great week,
 Love Elder Summers

Picture Dump Day

Picture day.  Here's a mish mosh of Elder Summers last week in Vienna.

Elder Summers saying goodbye to Vienna and Elder Plumb.  Wien 5 treated him well.

Sleeping on the rooftop the last night in Vienna.  I'd say that's a pretty fun way to make an exit.

Night time views with an Elder Summers photo bomb.

Haus des Meeres and enjoying the under water tunnel.

Looking cautiously happy while visiting the animals at Haus des Meeres.

Elder Plumb didn't seem to mind the new friend he had made.

Scenic overlook at the Haus des Meeres.

Elder Summers with..... questions to be asked in his next letter home.  I believe they are the home owners of a house Ben helped renovate every Saturday.  He honestly enjoyed working on the house.

Saturday reconstruction action.

The house that missionaries learned life skills and offered service to others.

Elder Summers loved with all his heart Vienna; the people, the culture, the city life, mostly the people.  What a wonderful place to start out on your mission.

My favorite picture of the goofy companions.  I enjoyed watching Ben grow while serving with EP.

Be sure to put your feet in the right place- Letter home from Aug 31,2015

Left foot in Austria and right foot in the Czech Republic

So the past week had a lot of fun stuff going on.. Monday well i told you that story (they taught lessons and got stuck in traffic). Tuesday, we took our pday and we just walked around and looked at stuff, i took pictures and sent them.
Possibly at Hogwarts?
Wednesday we we had Tausch, which means we swap companions for the day, so i was with Elder Ward, a zone leader, and we talked with this less active family.   The mom has a lot of questions and stuff, but hopefully we can help her out.
Thursday
was interesting.. So we went with the family Husz the ones we went with, he is a former 70, he is a really cool dude.
Summers and Plumb with the family Husz

Beautiful cabin near the Czech border

So we went out to the cabin, I sent pics of all of this so don't worry.   So that was 2 hrs or so out there, we ate at this really good restaurant and i had Wiener schnitzel and salad and for desert we had mohn knödel, it had some really good raspberry and chocolate center.  It was sooo good.  For service we just moved like 2 mattresses and a bed frame to their trailer and went to the Czech border. I sent a pic of that as well and we did not get back till late. Oh, ps the photo of the ground and me with the metal great that was the Czech border and Austrian so left was Austria and right was Czech.
Who knew Elder Summers would become such a world traveler.

Elder Plumb and Elder Summers right on the border of their mission.

Convinced Elder Summers is at Hogwarts

 Friday
we had lunch with an elderly couple and then we had a lesson with an investigator, she is coming along really well.  Saturday we did more service at the house.  We put up border on the ceiling so they can do the eletricity and I scrapped wallpaper. I love working on that house.   Sunday we had church and a investigator we have been teaching brought her entire family so thats super exciting!   Then essen(eat) and we brought the sacrament to a sister and then we had dinner with a investigaor and her member husband.   So it was a great week for investigators!

The food here is not that bad.  I eat everything I'm given, haha even a thing like Tingey soup I had a couple days ago.  :)  I'll sent Jack a card and Emma somthing too if I can.   Yeah its crazy how Jacob is almost in the rank of Elder! Time goes by really fast out here.   Honestly, what can I say I'm the white raptor!

For the spiritual growth, well I'm reading the New Testament and the Book of Mormon and they go so well together.   My testimony of the gospel has grown so much more than it ever has honestly, its really nice.  Elder Plumb says hello. So 1 thing with the missionaries in the ward back home, one way i would say how to best help them is referrals honestly, and connect with them, talk with them.  Nothing is worse than being in a ward that the members don't talk with the missionaries, so that's my advice for the week.   Nothing really scary happened this week, partly because we don't go out at night, haha.   Oh so we went to Prater park,  I sent pics.

So its a amusement park and we rode the tallest swings in Europe or in the world, so yeah that was a lot of fun.  I'm getting along with everyone and learning new things every day. Oh hey can you please send Abraham Lincoln quotes in your emails cause he is such a cool guy.   I was reading a little about him and did not realize how religious he was, so pretty please can you?

Have a great week mom.   I love you so very much.   Keep on being the best mom in the world and I'll see you in like 20 months.

 Mit Groß Liebe,
 Elder Summers

Sept. 7, 2015 Elder Summers letter home and showing Big Brother Love

Yeah I did hear about the refugee situation, they are all at west bahnhof and we don't go over there, but yeah.   President Kohler emailed us and said we could do service if we want with them, but yeah some people are talking about it here.  Give Hannah my love, I'm glad everyone is liking school more haha.   I'll email Jack later haha and Katie says for you to stop being a butt to her haha.  Hopefully my email helps her.  That's really awesome that Elder Bednar is coming and they get to go see and meet him,  it will be a great thing indeed.  I'm really happy for Jacob getting to Brazil, Good year!  I did get a pic of him and he looks great yeah, i think the wanting to get on the plane was a, "I'm ready for this lets go" kinda thing and not "I want to get out of here" kinda thing.   Can you send me his email?

Plumb and Summers ready to go for a swing ride.

Yeah it's already cooled down to like I the low 60's or so, it's super nice!   Thanks, yeah it was a really fun swing ride cost me like 5€ though, but that's ok haha, it was worth it.   You can send videos if you want I don't mind, I'm ok, all the elders I live with are almost dead so they talk about home a lot, so videos won't make it worse, haha yeah.

I'm doing really good, not much happened this week.  On Monday was just lessons with people cause the only time they can do it is on Monday.... Tuesday we looked at watches cause EP wants to get a nice one, I might get a swatch for people in the fam for Christmas, I'll see if I have the money. Wednesday we went by and no one was home so we just found someplace and we studied. Thursday we helped with the house, I'll take pictures next time I'm there so you can see what I'm talking about. Friday was a adventure for sure.  We went out to Bernhardsthal, that's 1hr 45mi drive from Wien, and then we took this van 35min to Poysdorf  to give a referral a Book of Mormon, who was not home, so then we took a taxi, which are expensive but EP payed cause he had money set aside for that, so all in all we got home at like 9:20 or so, it was a fun day. Saturday we helped with the house more and the zone leaders have a Taufe on Thursday so EP is the DL so he had to do the Taufe interview and we got home at 10 or so, it was a fun day.  Sunday we just went to church and weekly planned cause we had no time Friday, so ta-da, that's my week in a nut shell!  Full of fun.
Caught without umbrellas.

I'll send pic next week don't worry, oh also something more serious, I think it would be a good idea to talk about dad with the kids, but more with Katie and Jack.  Me and EP talked about it, and yeah, see how they feel about everything. Make sure they are ok and that they are not hiding any feelings about it, so yeah just a thought.

I love you lots mom, more than you know.  Have a great week and keep on being the very best.

 With Great Love,
 Elder Summers

Letter home Sept 14,2015 Last Week in Wien

Hey so yeah news with transfers.......well I. Leaving on Thursday for Klagenfurt B in the Salzburg zone. So that's that I'll get you the address as soon as I find out what it is I'll send it to you, so yeah it's in southern Austria.

Great gathering for a baptism in Vienna, even President Kohler came!

We are going to the Haus des Meers today, so I'm excited for my last p day in Wien.  Honestly not much happened this week except a Baptism.  Recently the zone leaders have been teaching her and they asked about baptism and yeah, so after 10 years she has been baptized!

So yeah, we did a lot of service, I said goodbye to everyone in the ward and what not.   Not much has happened. I'm excited that you are going back to school well doing the online course.  So transfers are every 6 weeks, just a FYI kinda thing, sorry this is kinda short not much happened.

Plumb, Albrecht, Ward, and Summers

On Monday we looked at watches with Elder Plumb and then Tuesday we taught English and went to the biggest mall in Europe shopping center or city south so that was fun.  Wednesday we had Tausch and I was with Elder McLean, he has been out for 8 months so it was cool.  Thursday we had zone training and taught English Friday we went with Elder Albrecht and Elder Ward came with us to the cabin by the Czech border to help move stuff, it was fun.  Saturday I helped on the house one last time and I took pictures and what not but don't have time to drop box today, so yeah.  After that we went to a primary thing at Wien 3 and helped with that, it was fun, and we found someone at it so it was all good.   Sunday I bore my testimony  in German and said goodbye to everyone then we just chilled at home and weekly planned, but other than that not much.

Eating at a Burger King in Vienna..... oh bother.

I love you so very much mom you are the best mom ever 😁don't forget it.

I'll send pictures of my new area when I can have a great week and keep on being awesome.

 Love Elder Summers

Letter Home Sept 21,2015- No Growth in the Comfort Zone, Goodbye Wien

At the train station getting ready to leave Vienna.

From Mom- The letter home this week was rough to read, heartbreaking in it's briefness and I just wanted to hug my big guy and tell him "Cheer up Charlie, give me a smile.  What happened to that smile I used to know?  Don't you know your smile has always been my sunshine, let that sunshine show." Because you can never know the sweet without the sour, I publish this recent letter home.  I contemplated whether or not to say that my son is in my opinion, really missing Vienna, his old companion Elder Plumb and the wonderful families of Wien 5.  But then again, "There is no growth in the comfort zone; there is no comfort in the growth zone."  As Ben said, "I need to find the positive."  I have no doubt that he will be able to find it, because he is doing the Lord's work, he is serving His children, teaching His children.

Monday we went to the aquarium and that was a lot of fun. Tuesday we had a eating appointment with the family Zemps, it was awesome.  Wednesday I said bye to everyone and had another eating appointment and Thursday we had transfers.  On Wednesday night we slept on the roof, I have a pic but drop box was full.  So we waited in Salzburg for 5 hours because the borders are shut down and the ones coming from Germany had to drive cause no trains were running between Austria and Germany.  There were a lot of refugees in the Bahnhof so it was kinda dirty in there, then it was a 3 hour train ride to Klagenfurt, so that was fun so all in all I got to the new place around 930 or so.  Friday we got to know the area, had a fireside and met a lot of the members then on Saturday we went finding all.....day....long. So yeah and found no one.  My honest opinion about this place is well.......I need to find the positive about it that's all I'm going to say.  I live in a four man and we spent most of our day just cleaning the apartment cause it was really dirty and moving things so that we had more room.  In honesty nothing interesting happened this week sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear but that's how it is yeah.  I'm really bummed about leaving Wien and Elder Plumb and everyone.  I'll send pictures next week I love you mom and love everything you do for me have a great week and be awesome

Love,
 Elder Summers

The letters home in which Elder Summers makes his Momma cry

So Elder Albrecht is the one in red and Elder Ward is the one in green (I don't see green, do you?) Yes I did get the birthday gift from Jessie and I loved it!  We are still in with the zone leaders, with our apartment they drilled holes in the floor and are now pumping hot air into the floor to dry it out.  We have to go there every day to empty the buckets that collect all the moister from the air.

S the guy we help with the house was sick so we did not work on it this week. And for stories well nothing really exciting happened, haha.  We did a lot of service this week.   Tuesday
we had zone training and we just took our p day that day, like we finished emailing and walked around fancy stores, which we are going to do today as well.  Wednesday we played a game with an investigator and the Wien 3 elders as well and then we had an eating appointment that night.  Thursday not much happened just lesson and Friday we did more service.  We moved a bunch of wood from a Keller(basement) to a trailer then to the dump and every friday is weekly planning so that takes 3 or so hours.  Saturday we met with a less active who is coming back to church, so we are both excited about that, and we also went and moved a wardrobe to a Keller and they fed us home made schnitzel, it was good!

So,the reason I ran out of time on Monday.  We had a lesson at 10 and after that we had lunch with the brother from our ward that takes the elders out once a month, anyway, after that got done at 2:30, Elder Plumb needed a haircut so we got that done and then we had a family home evening with a family in the ward at 6.  It takes a bit to get out there so we left at 4 but we got there at 5 so I typed up emails for those I did not email yet, and yeah, but I put the most thought into your emails so don't worry.  (he loves his momma)

Yes, I'm learning a lot from Elder Plumb, he is a great missionary and a great person.  He has really helped me with my German and he is really gun ho about missionary work.   Elder Plumb is a great companion.  It's not really that bad being the freshman with all the seniors, it's really cool to hear all their wisdom and mission tips, it gives me so thing to go for.

The Z family are doing really great.  Little B is still awesome and cute.  Yeah, I have contact with a lot of families like the S family and the J family, they are all super cool families and they want to help with missionary work.  The bishops name is M, he is a really awesome e guy too.  Plumb told me that this ward is one of the best he has been in his entire mission, so I'm really happy that I'm here.  I love it here in Wien!

The type of sauerkraut, well I asked Plumb and just said sauerkraut so I don't know, haha.   Nothing I have eaten so far has been gross.   Even all the tomatoes I have eaten, I'm still not a huge fan but I eat them when they are presented, same with spaghetti.   I told you that's what I would do, haha!  (many a table discussion with my son about having to eat food he doesn't like on his mission, like tomatoes and spaghetti, he remembers!)

Haha, everyone told me they hated the first day of school but don't worry, I said good things.  I gave one of my sisters extra love and words of encouragement.*  I'm really impressed with Hannah! Even though she may struggle in reading, that's ok! Tell her she is doing really great.

That's really crazy that Jacob leaves so soon but that's just how it is honestly time has gone by so fast like I remember when it was my 1st day in the field but now I'm in my 3rd transfer, and pretty soon it will be Christmas time and I'll be able to Skype home.

But yeah it's been super good I'm loving every second of it and learning new things about the gospel everyday. This week is fun filled too.  We are going really close to the Czech border because one member owns a cabin out there and we are going to do service on it.  Our area goes all the way up to the Czech border and the Slovakia border also, so its a huge area!

So yeah, I love you lots mom.   Have a great week and keep on being a awesome mom.

 Love,
 Elder Summers

*(Big brothers advice to little sis) One of the many things I have learned out here is that everything happens for a reason you just gotta find that reason. So that's my advice on the crappy start, I'm sure you will have loads of fun in all your classes!  I'm sure it will be great honestly lil sis, I used to complain a lot about things but what helped me is funding the reason for everything.  You may not find it right away but you will. One thing I have noticed on my mission is that people want everything, now. We don't see 5 min ahead of our faces and it totally blinds us. So my challenge to you is to think about the future.  Where do you see yourself in a month, having a crap time or a good time, it's all up to you! I love you lots lil sis.  Remember to read, pray, and to remember who you are. Love Elder Ben
